Five people hacked to death as Driver rams into New Year party
No fewer than five persons have been reported dead after a vehicle rammed into a New Year party in Akinmorin near Oyo town in Oyo State.
According to reports, the vehicle knocked down about ten people at the party, with five persons dying instantly, while the other five sustaining severe injuries and have been rushed to a nearby hospital.
Reports claim that the driver of the vehicle speedily rammed the car into the party at Baba Ode area of the community, hitting the victims in the process.
Some persons were said to have confronted the driver for driving at such top speed, but the confrontation reportedly degenerated into an argument which infuriated the young man who was said to be drunk.
One of the persons at the party, who witnessed the incident, anonymously said: “After intervention of some elders around, the young man entered his car reluctantly. Still angry at the confrontation, he vowed to spill blood. Then he started the car and and zoomed into the dancing friends, knocking down over 10 people.”
Three of his friends who were in the car at the time were said to have been arrested, while his whereabouts were unknown.
When contacted, police spokesman, Adewale Osifeso, confirmed the incident, but reportedly did not give details saying only investigation had started.

The embattled former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has declared himself the authentic Speaker of the House, saying he has resumed his position as the parliament leader.
Obasa made this known on Thursday after returning to the Assembly Complex under the protection of police and State Security Service operatives.
“I’ve resumed, and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly,” Obasa said.
It was his first time back since his removal on 13 January 2025.
Obasa arrived at the complex with more than 11 police officers and headed straight to the Speaker’s Office, ignoring his colleagues who were seen deliberating in the Assembly’s garden before his entrance.
His return follows a dramatic turn of events at the Assembly, where the security details of the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, were reportedly withdrawn.

The Sultanate Council has formally declared that the hunt for the new moon of Ramadan 1446AH will begin on Friday, February 28.
The Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, encouraged Muslims to look up at the sky on Friday in anticipation of the new moon in a statement issued Thursday.
He instructed those who spot the moon to report their sightings to the nearest District or Village Head.
Once reported, the sightings will be relayed to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who also serves as the President of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, for a formal declaration.
