Finland Govt confirms Terrorism charges against Simon Ekpa
Finnish prosecutors have filed formal charges against Simon Ekpa, accusing him of inciting terrorism online in connection with his activities advocating for the secession of Nigeria’s Biafra region.
In a statement released on Friday, Finland’s National Prosecution Authority (NPA) confirmed that a Finnish national had been charged with “public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent and participation in the activities of a terrorist group.”
The alleged offenses were said to have occurred in Lahti, Finland, between 2021 and 2024.
Although the statement did not mention Ekpa by name, Finnish public broadcaster YLE identified the accused as the controversial Biafran separatist figure.
Ekpa is widely known as the self-declared leader of the “Biafra Republic Government in Exile.”
Prosecutors also announced that charges against four other individuals initially linked to the case had been dropped due to insufficient evidence.
Ekpa, who holds dual Finnish-Nigerian citizenship, was detained in November 2024. Authorities say he remains in custody and has denied all allegations.
Beyond his separatist activism, Ekpa has previously served as a local representative for Finland’s conservative National Coalition Party and held a position on Lahti’s public transport committee.
