Father facing death penalty for allegedly beating six-week-old twin Daughters to deaths

A father known as, Fernando Vega, has been charged with capital murder in connection with the tragic deaths of his twin newborn daughters, Massail and Mirena, who were found dead in their Houston home on October 4, 2023.

Daily Mail UK reports that if convicted, Vega could face the death penalty.

Initially arrested on April 19, Vega faced charges of causing serious bodily injury to a child, alongside the twins’ mother, 21-year-old Angelina Belinda Calderon.

However, following further investigation, authorities upgraded Vega’s charges to two counts of capital murder, alleging that he was solely responsible for the infants’ deaths.

On that fateful morning in October, police found the six-week-old twins unresponsive on a couch in their residence on Linden Creek Way. Officers noted that the infants displayed discolored skin and bruises, with one of the girls suffering visible fractures.

Court documents indicate that the twins had been discharged from the hospital without adequate medical care and were malnourished.

Dr. Jesus Rico, a pathologist at the Harris County Institute of Forensic Science, conducted an examination revealing signs of dehydration, bruising, and fractures consistent with prior abuse. One twin also exhibited signs of acute brain bleeding and spinal cord injuries, suggesting recent trauma.

During a court hearing on Wednesday, prosecutor Edward Appelbaum stated his commitment to conducting a thorough investigation into the twins’ deaths before finalising any murder charges.

The case remains under investigation as Vega awaits trial.
