Governor suspends mining activities over security concerns

The Taraba State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of all mining activities across the state following security concerns that authorities say could threaten the prevailing peace and stability in the area.

The directive, approved by Governor Agbu Kefas, was announced in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Gebon Kataps, who said the decision followed credible intelligence reports pointing to security threats linked to mining operations.

According to the government, the suspension will remain in effect while measures are put in place to address the identified threats and strengthen oversight of the sector.

As part of the response, the state government said it would establish a new task force to oversee mining activities and ensure that operations resume only after the security situation has been fully addressed.

Kataps directed all local government councils and traditional rulers to enforce the suspension strictly, warning that violations would attract sanctions.

He urged residents and community leaders to remain vigilant and report any suspected breaches of the directive to the nearest security agency, stressing that the government would treat any infringement of the order with seriousness.

The government also disclosed plans to meet with artisanal miners next week to brief them on new security measures and vigilance requirements aimed at safeguarding mining communities and operators.

Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the state government said it remains focused on protecting lives and property while ensuring that mining activities are conducted only within a secure and properly regulated environment.

The statement further urged citizens to cooperate with security agencies and promptly report any suspicious activities as authorities work to maintain peace across the state.
