13 Vigilantes trying to protect their community killed by gunmen in ambush attack

A deadly attack by the Lakurawa terrorist group on Sunday has left 13 members of a local vigilante group dead in Morai, a community in the Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The vigilantes were reportedly attempting to defend their community when the armed assailants, who had targeted the area for cattle rustling, launched their attack.

As the terrorists descended on the village, the vigilante group mobilised in a bid to repel the intruders, only to be ambushed and encircled.

Malam Ibrahim Augie, a local resident, spoke to Daily Trust, recounting the events.

He said the vigilantes, upon learning of the terrorists’ incursion, had hurried to the scene in large numbers to protect the community.

However, despite their efforts, they were outmatched, and 13 of the vigilantes were tragically killed in the attack.

He said, “The vigilantes hid to attack and recapture the rustled cattle, but they didn’t know the Lakurawa had already seen them and they were shot and killed,” he said.
