Nigerian Woman dies less than a month after moving to UK to join her Husband

The Nigerian community in the United Kingdom is in mourning following the death of Mrs. Olubunmi Okeniyi, who passed away on October 13, 2024, just weeks after relocating to Sunderland with her two children to join her husband, Mr. Jacob Okeniyi.

The family arrived in the UK on September 16.

This tragic loss has sparked concern among community members regarding the health and safety of Nigerians moving to the UK. Many have voiced their grief over the alarming trend of deaths occurring shortly after relocation, noting that Mrs. Okeniyi is not the first to experience such a fate; two other Nigerians had similarly passed away recently after their arrival.

In a message shared within the community, members announced her passing and initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with burial expenses. The appeal read: “With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Mrs. Olubunmi Okeniyi, who tragically passed away on 13/10/24 at 4:30 PM in Sunderland. She is survived by her husband, Mr. Jacob Okeniyi, and we urgently seek donations to support her immediate burial, as her husband cannot afford the costs. Any contribution, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated during this difficult time.”

According to community member Godwin Ejeh, the 49-year-old Mrs. Okeniyi had been battling breast cancer prior to her move. After arriving in the UK, she began treatment; however, doctors indicated a poor prognosis and recommended palliative care, which was administered at home by visiting medical professionals.

On the day of her passing, Mrs. Okeniyi asked for help to use the restroom. After her husband and children assisted her, her condition suddenly worsened. Caregivers, who had just left, were called back but unfortunately arrived too late to save her.

As of Wednesday evening, the GoFundMe campaign had raised £5,800, with £3,557 coming from community contributions.
