BREAKING; FIFA Penalises South Africa, deducts 3 points for Fielding Ineligible Player in W/Cup Qualifier

South Africa’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have taken a significant hit after the world football governing body, FIFA, penalised the team for fielding an ineligible player in a recent qualifier.

In a statement released on Monday, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee confirmed that Bafana Bafana breached player eligibility rules during their Group C fixture against Lesotho, played on March 21, 2025.

The player in question, Teboho Mokoena, was deemed ineligible for the match, leading to sanctions under Article 19 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and Article 14 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Preliminary Competition Regulations.

As a consequence, FIFA ruled that South Africa must forfeit the match, awarding a 3-0 victory to Lesotho. The decision also adjusts the Group C standings significantly:

South Africa’s total points drop from 17 to 14; Lesotho gains three points, boosting their standing; Benin Republic, now level with South Africa on 14 points, moves into first place due to a superior goal difference; Nigeria’s World Cup Hopes Revived

The ruling offers a renewed lifeline to the Super Eagles of Nigeria, who now sit just three points behind South Africa in third place, with two qualification matches remaining.

The group is now wide open, with potential qualification scenarios hinging on upcoming fixtures.

While the decision is immediately enforceable, FIFA confirmed that South Africa has the right to appeal the forfeiture before the FIFA Appeal Committee. It remains unclear whether the South African Football Association (SAFA) will challenge the ruling.
