By-election; APC records supremacy in landslide victory across Nigeria, taking PDP, LP ADC, NNPP to the cleaners
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the results of the recent by-elections held across 16 constituencies, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerging as the clear winner.
The APC secured victories in 12 constituencies, solidifying its political dominance ahead of the 2027 general election.
The main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), managed to win only one seat.
The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) claimed two seats, while the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) held onto one.
The Labour Party (LP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) did not win any constituencies.
The PDP’s sole victory was in Oyo state, where Fola Oyekunle won the Ibadan North federal constituency seat. Oyekunle secured 18,404 votes, defeating his closest rival, Adewale Olatunji of the APC, who polled 8,312 votes.
In contrast, the APC swept both contests in Edo state, winning the Ovia federal constituency and the central senatorial district.
Omosede Igbinedion won the Ovia seat with 77,053 votes, beating the PDP’s Johnny Aikpitanyi, who had 3,838 votes.
In the central senatorial district, Joseph Ikpea triumphed with 105,129 votes, while his PDP challenger garnered 15,146 votes.
The APC also recorded victories in other states:
Kaduna: Felix Bagudu won the Chikun/Kajuru federal constituency with 34,580 votes.
Jigawa: Muktar Rabi’u secured the Garki-Babura federal constituency with 38,449 votes, well ahead of the PDP’s Isa Auwalu (13,519 votes) and NNPP’s Sabo Salisu (2,931 votes).
Taraba: Abner Shittu won the Karim 1 state constituency with 5,901 votes, narrowly defeating the PDP’s Ali Kanda (5,527 votes).
Niger: Dogari Daje won the Munya constituency with 12,556 votes, defeating the PDP’s Sabon Sunday (5,646 votes).
Adamawa: Misa Musa won with a slim margin of 129 votes, polling 15,923 votes against the PDP’s Buba Muhammad, who had 15,794 votes.
Kano: The APC won the Ghari/Tsanyawa constituency supplementary election for the state house of assembly.
The NNPP’s sole victory in a Kano House of Representatives seat reaffirms the party’s growing influence in the North-West.
APGA’s strongest showing was in Anambra, where the party won the vacant senatorial seat and a state house of assembly seat.
INEC, however, declared the by-election for the Kaura Namoda South constituency in Zamfara inconclusive following the cancellation of results in several polling units.
