Angry crowd overpowers Police, forcibly takes two Motorcycle Thieves from custody lynches them

A mob in Issele-Uku, Delta State, forcibly took two handcuffed suspects from police custody and lynched them on the spot.

The two individuals, accused of motorcycle theft, faced a brutal end when outraged youths overpowered law enforcement officers.

This shocking act of mob violence has sparked widespread condemnation in Issele-Uku, a town known for its strong cultural values and peaceful nature, raising alarms about the growing trend of jungle justice and the erosion of law and order.

Mr. Offordile Uge, President-General of the Issele-Uku Development Union (IDU), condemned the incident as a breach of the community’s principles.

He stressed the importance of law enforcement agencies adhering to established protocols during arrests to protect suspects from mob retribution.

Uge also called for collaboration with traditional elders to restore peace and address the violence tarnishing the community.

He reiterated the commitment of local leaders to work alongside security forces to uphold order and prevent further criminal activity in the area.

Uge said: “We strongly condemn this mob action. Issele-Uku is a sacred town that values peace and abhors jungle justice. This act of lawlessness is unacceptable and goes against everything we stand for.

“It is disturbing that these suspects were taken from the hands of the police and lynched. We will continue to collaborate with the police and other security forces to safeguard our town from becoming a haven for criminals.”

He urged the police to more rigorously enforce their rules of engagement to deter mobs from taking justice into their own hands, which could jeopardize both suspects and law enforcement officers.

“As a community rooted in tradition, we will consult our elders to perform rituals aimed at cleansing our land of this senseless violence. This brutality does not represent our true values as a people,” he emphasized.

Uge noted that this alarming incident underscores the peril of jungle justice in Nigeria, where mob actions frequently undermine due process, resulting in tragic consequences.
