Akpabio accuses Natasha of misrepresenting facts, embarrassing Nigeria

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central has been accused of distorting facts and causing embarrassment to the Nigerian Senate following her six-month suspension for alleged violations of Senate rules.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, during Thursday’s plenary session, criticised Akpoti-Uduaghan for “globalizing” her suspension by presenting a different version of events.

The Senator had recently attended the United Nations Inter-Parliamentary Conference in New York, where she spoke out about her suspension.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, in her statements, claimed that the suspension was a result of victimization after she accused Akpabio of sexual harassment and abuse of office.

The accusations have further fueled tensions within the Senate, with the lawmaker maintaining that her suspension was politically motivated.

Responding to her allegations on Thursday, Akpabio stated, “I am aware that she distorted the facts and globalised the matter, embarrassing the Senate by giving a different narrative.

“I appreciate Hon Kafilat for clarifying to the international media that what was presented was completely different from the reality.

“She brought the matter before the Senate through a petition but did not allow us to examine it. Instead, she took it to court and later to the international community.

“Actions like these could discourage politicians from appointing women into key positions.”
