Bolanle Raheem: IGP, Gov Sanwo-Olu meet: Govt pledges more non-lethal equipments

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Usman Alkali Baba, has again reassured speedy justice in the murder of the Lagos-based lawyer Mrs Bolanle Raheem and other victims of the recent shooting incidents in Lagos state.

The IGP made the promise on Thursday when he met with the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the Force Headquarters, Louis Edet House, Abuja.

This was made in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer Abuja, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi on 29th December 2022.

Governor Sanwo-Olu who came on a visit to the Force Headquarters to brief the IGP on the security situation in Lagos as well as get an update on the late lawyer’s case “promised to support the Police in making sure that justice is served in the extant case and to collaborate with the Police on advocacy programmes to educate the citizenry on understanding and respecting the laws of the land for an improved relationship with the Police”.

According to the statement, “He similarly stressed that his administration will partner with the Police to carry out refresher courses, training, and retraining, and other evaluation processes for police officers in all facets of policing duties”.

“He also emphasized the need to provide some equipment like body cameras, non-lethal weapons, etc., to curb excessive use of powers and boost good police/citizens relationships”.

“The Inspector-General of Police therefore charged all officers to imbibe absolute respect for rule of law and the fundamental rights of all persons, which is the crux and fulcrum of policing services”.

He also encouraged members of the public to cooperate with police officers for seamless collaborative efforts to stamp out crimes and criminality in the Nigerian society.

BREAKING: Obasa resumed at Lagos Assembly, declares himself as the Speaker

The embattled former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has declared himself the authentic Speaker of the House, saying he has resumed his position as the parliament leader.

Obasa made this known on Thursday after returning to the Assembly Complex under the protection of police and State Security Service operatives.

“I’ve resumed, and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly,” Obasa said.

It was his first time back since his removal on 13 January 2025.

Obasa arrived at the complex with more than 11 police officers and headed straight to the Speaker’s Office, ignoring his colleagues who were seen deliberating in the Assembly’s garden before his entrance.

His return follows a dramatic turn of events at the Assembly, where the security details of the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, were reportedly withdrawn.

Ramadan set to commence as Sultan of Sokoto issues directives to Muslim nationwide

The Sultanate Council has formally declared that the hunt for the new moon of Ramadan 1446AH will begin on Friday, February 28.

The Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, encouraged Muslims to look up at the sky on Friday in anticipation of the new moon in a statement issued Thursday.

He instructed those who spot the moon to report their sightings to the nearest District or Village Head.

Once reported, the sightings will be relayed to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who also serves as the President of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, for a formal declaration.
