A Police Inspector was killed during a violent clash on Sunday in the border town between officials of the Nigeria Customs Service and residents of the community.

However eight suspects have been arrested by Ogun State Police Command over the death of the Police officer in the Yewa North Local Government Area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident on Sunday, said eight persons had been apprehended in connection with the murder of the police Inspector.

The PPRO said the slain inspector was a member of the National Border Team, which was on a routine anti-smuggling operation in the area.

He stated that, “The suspects killed one policeman, who was attached to the National Border Team. They seized his gun, hit him with a car and then shot him dead.

“Some suspects have been arrested in connection with the crime and the inspector’s rifle has been recovered.

“Presently, the case is being handled by the homicide section of the command.

“We have arrested eight suspects and they have been transferred to the homicide section of the state police command, Eleweran, Abeokuta.”

It was gathered that many residents of the community had fled their homes and were hiding in the bush.

Some were reported to have locked themselves up in their houses to avoid arrest and reprisal by security agents following the killing of the inspector.

But, the PPRO said normalcy had been restored in the community.

He stated, “We are still looking for members of that syndicate and we are not going to rest on our laurels until the last person, who participated in that nefarious activity, is apprehended.

“Those who did it have invited trouble and they will see the trouble. It is barbaric to launch an attack on law enforcement agents, who are doing their normal duty.

“We will do everything humanly possible to get them punished. They are criminals.”

Medical Doctor kidnapped by gunmen in front of his residence

The Police Command in Anambra has confirmed the kidnap of Dr Cornelius Onuigbo, an urologist with Department of Surgery, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Anambra.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, while confirming the incident to newsmen in Onitsha on Wednesday, said that Onuigbo was kidnapped by gunmen on Tuesday evening.

Ikenga said that the command was aware of the incident, adding that it was on top of the situation.

“We have already mobilised for the rescue of the doctor. The Commissioner of Police, Mr Nnaghe Itam, has given orders for this, and men of the command are currently at work,” he said.

An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said that the incident occurred at the entrance gate of doctors’ residence in Nnewi, as Onuigbo was returning home from work.

The source further said that the armed men intercepted the medical doctor, forced him into their vehicle and drove off.

“The medical doctor was rounded up by some armed men suspected to be kidnappers, as he was about to enter the gate of his residence.

“They had a few conversations with him after which they asked him to enter into their vehicle and drove off,” the source stated.

A staff member of the university, who did not want his name mentioned, confirmed the development, adding that the authorities of the hospital were aware of the incident and that they were doing the needful. (NAN)

The former deputy senate president was sentenced to 10 years, while his wife was sentenced to six years.

The return of Mrs Ekweremadu is being celebrated across Enugu State, with many praying to have the Deputy Senate President back in the shortest possible time.

Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, on Tuesday welcomed over 40,000 card-carrying members from various opposition parties into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The mass defection took place at the State Government House, where the Governor received the new members with open arms.

Governor Radda expressed his gratitude, stating, “Your decision to join our progressive movement strengthens our resolve to build a greater Katsina state.”

He went on to assure the defectors of his commitment to inclusive leadership, directing officials at all levels to ensure their full integration into APC activities.

The group of defectors was led by former Deputy Speakers of the State House of Assembly, Yakubu Idris Dan Chafa and Hassan Suleiman Rawayau.

Other prominent figures among the defectors included Isah Hamisu Dandume of the All Peoples Party (APP) and Musa Gafai, Chairman of Gafai Communication and former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aspirant for the Federal House of Representatives, along with several former state legislators and local government chairmen.

In an earlier briefing, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, Ya’u Umar Gwajo Gwajo, explained that the defectors came from a broad coalition of political parties.
