Come join us in APC, we will support you – House of Reps Deputy Speaker promises another PDP Governor
The Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Mr Benjamin Kalu, has called on Gov. Alex Otti of Abia to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), assuring him of full support if he defects.
Kalu made the call on Monday during an annual Christmas Food Distribution/Town Hall Meeting he organised in his country home in Agbamuzu, Bende Local Government Area.
He said: “Let me tell you, I want to use this opportunity again, publicly, to invite Governor Alex Otti to join our party.
“If he comes to our party, we will support him.”
He stressed that the APC remained open to leaders willing to work collectively to strengthen the party and advance its political objectives in Abia.
Kalu said that it was always an honour to return home, noting that the legislature, the President Bola Tinubu-led administration were working for Nigerians.
He said that he remained accountable to his constituents and was driven by the belief that Nigeria’s best days were ahead.
Kalu urged Nigerians to support the President , the APC, and its Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that the TInubu-led administration was building a lasting legacy for future generations.
He said that the rice distribution initiative began in 2003 as a humanitarian effort, long before he held public office or contemplated any political ambition.
He noted that in spite of the 23 years of consistent service, the programme was now being politicised, adding that he had not declared any intention to contest the governorship.
Kalu dismissed social media attacks, recalling that similar predictions were made before his House of Representatives election, which he won decisively.
He said that consultations were ongoing within the party and that he was awaiting direction from the APC leadership.
The Deputy Speaker encouraged party members interested in contesting elections in 2027 to be bold, assuring them of the President’s support for APC candidates.
He also called for sustained grassroots mobilisation in the state to further advance the party’s objectives.
On empowerment, Kalu announced a N1 billion intervention to support 2,000 small and medium-scale businesses across all local government areas of the state.
He said that each beneficiary would receive about N500,000 initially, with agencies such as the Bank of Industry, Bank of Agriculture, and SMEDAN expected to partner to expand the programme.
He said that forms were available at the Renewed Hope Office on Ojike Street, Umuahia, and must be submitted within 30 days.
Kalu described Abia as an enterprising state and said the initiative would stimulate economic growth and empower the people.
In his remark, the Lawmaker representing Ukwa East and Ukwa West Federal Constituency, Chief Chris Nkwonta, said it was a privilege to have a leader like Kalu.
He noted that in less than three years, Kalu had delivered 58 projects as the deputy speaker, describing the achievement as commendable.
According to him, his constituency once produced a number three citizen of the country with little to show for it, stressing that Kalu’s performance stood in sharp contrast.
Nkwonta said that the Deputy Speaker had distinguished himself at the House of Representatives as a lawmaker of integrity and repute, having sponsored over 100 bills, with more than 20 assented to by the President.
He declared that Abia had been fully harmonised under the APC, insisting that anyone telling the President the party would secure only 25 per cent of votes in the state was not sincere.
“Abia will deliver 100 per cent of the votes to APC.
“There is no need for alliances. Abia is APC, and APC is Abia,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the APC would win at both the national and state levels.
In his address, the Chairman of APC in Abia, Mr Kingsley Ononogbu, praised Kalu for his integrity, vision, and grassroots leadership style and for reflecting commitment to equality and development across Abia.
Ononogbu expressed confidence in the Tinubu-led administration, citing stable fuel supply, reduced food prices, and improving exchange rates as signs of progress.
He prayed God to grant the deputy speaker long life and wisdom to continue his leadership and further service to Nigeria.
In their goodwill messages some APC Chieftains, Mr Emeka Stanley, Chief Uzo Azubuike and Mrs Blessing Nwagba, commended the deputy speaker for his inclusive style of leadership.
They reaffirmed commitment to the APC, expressing confidence that unity, faith and collective effort would guarantee victory and continued progress for the party and its supporters across the country nationwide.
They also said that APC in Abia had grown stronger and united under Kalu’s leadership, assuring the President that the party was prepared to deliver victory in forthcoming elections confidently statewide.
Earlier, the Director-General of the Benjamin Kalu Foundation, Mr Emma Eke, said that the engagements by Kalu had always focused on people’s welfare rather than partisan politics.
Eke noted that Kalu’s leadership remained people-centred, consistent and accountable, adding that the lawmaker continually identified with constituents’ sacrifices, resilience and hopes amid prevailing national and community challenges.
He said the gathering reflected inclusive leadership, with churches participating for the first time, underscoring the commitment of the Tinubu-led administration to serve all Nigerians.
He described the meeting as an accountability forum, noting that Kalu went to the Assembly to legislate, advocate and deliver, while assuring constituents that their voices and concerns be heard.
The event featured distribution of bags of rice and cash gifts to no fewer than 3,500 residents from the 17 Local Government Areas of the state.(NAN)

Kwankwaso sets tough conditions for possible APC defection
Kwankwaso sets tough conditions for possible APC defection
Former Kano State Governor and National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has indicated that any move toward the All Progressives Congress (APC) would depend on firm guarantees regarding political control in Kano and the protection of his supporters.
He made this known on Wednesday at his Miller Road home in Kano while receiving party leaders and loyalists from Rano and Dawakin Tofa Local Government Areas, as well as members of various Kwankwasiyya groups who used the visit to restate their allegiance to the NNPP.
“I didn’t say I won’t join APC, but we must first be clearly assured of the future of the Kano State government before we join the APC. What will be the fate of our lawmakers and other supporters before we agree to defect?” Kwankwaso said.
Reflecting on previous political alliances, the former governor warned against repeating past mistakes, recalling how his political bloc once helped to build a government but was later marginalized.
“In the past, we joined and contributed to forming the government, but later we were abandoned. That was why we left the party. Have they now changed their position toward us? Everyone knows the role we played at that time,” he added.
Kwankwaso emphasised that discussions about defection remain premature, insisting that no concrete commitments have been offered to safeguard the NNPP’s hold on power or its organizational framework in the state.
“Up till now, no one has given me a clear assurance that we will be allowed to retain our government and continue with our political structure. I need to know where I stand,” he said.
The gathering drew several senior government and party figures, including Deputy Governor Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, Commissioner for Science and Technology Yusuf Kofar Mata, NNPP state chairman Hon. Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, and other prominent officials. All openly reaffirmed their loyalty to Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
Political watchers noted that the visible solidarity from top officials points to growing internal tensions and further underscores Kwankwaso’s strong grip on the party, especially amid rumors surrounding a possible defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the APC.
Analysts believe Kwankwaso’s measured position reflects a broader strategy to secure political structures and protect loyalists as preparations gradually shift toward the 2027 general elections.

Govt suspend Doctors for leaving scissors in patient’s stomach after operation
The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has acknowledged that the death of Aishatu Umar, a five-time mother, resulted from professional lapses at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre, a government health facility in Kano.
According to a statement issued by the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, an internal probe initiated by the Executive Secretary, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, revealed that medical staff failed to remove surgical scissors from the patient’s body after an operation, a mistake that proved fatal.
Following the findings, the Board ordered the suspension of three staff members connected to the procedure, barring them from all clinical responsibilities with immediate effect.
The case has also been handed over to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee, which will conduct a more detailed inquiry and determine appropriate sanctions in accordance with existing regulations and ethical guidelines.
“The Board extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late Aishatu Umar and sympathizes with them over this painful loss. We reassure the public that negligence will not be condoned in any form,” the statement read.
Aishatu Umar reportedly died after complications arising from a surgery in which surgical scissors were allegedly left in her abdomen.
Her husband, Abubakar Muhammad, said she repeatedly complained of worsening health conditions after the operation, but her concerns were not adequately addressed before her death.
The tragedy has triggered widespread anger among Kano residents, drawing attention to systemic weaknesses in supervision and accountability within public hospitals.
