CP orders arrest of Police officer allegedly for torturing his 3 children over witchcraft

Operatives of Operation Doo Akpor have arrested a police inspector, identified as Sunday Idey, in Bayelsa State for allegedly assaulting his three children after accusing them of witchcraft.

Idey, who serves with the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Igbogene Police Division, reportedly attacked the children over the weekend, claiming they were members of a witchcraft group.

Confirming the arrest, the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Francis Idu, said the officer is currently in custody while investigations are ongoing.

According to eyewitnesses, neighbours rushed to the scene after hearing the children’s cries and promptly alerted the Operation Doo Akpor patrol team. The team rescued the victims and took them to a hospital for medical treatment.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation from rights groups and activists. The Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Bayelsa Chapter, Dr. Boma Toney Miebai, described the assault as “inhumane and deeply disturbing.”

She was joined by the National Association of Women Against Gender-Based Violence, led by Dr. Dise Ogbise Goddy Harry, and the Chairperson of the Do Foundation, Barr. Dianna Iluma Pius, in demanding justice for the victims and calling for their rehabilitation.

Officials from the Ministry of Women Affairs and Gender also visited the police station and the hospital to obtain firsthand information about the case.
