Sixteen inmates escape from prison after attacking correctional personnel

Sixteen inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa state, have escaped after launching an attack on Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) personnel.

According to a statement from Umar Abubakar, the Public Relations Officer for the NCoS, the incident took place early Tuesday morning.

Abubakar confirmed that “Some inmates breached the security of the facility and attacked personnel on duty to compromise the situation.”

Five staff members were injured during the incident, with two in serious condition and receiving urgent medical attention at a government health facility.

Of the sixteen escapees, seven have already been recaptured.

The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, has visited the facility and “has ordered a thorough investigation into the escape.”

Nwakuche stated that “no staff will be spared if found culpable.” He has also instructed an immediate search for the remaining escapees, in collaboration with other security agencies.

Abubakar, a Deputy Controller of Corrections, urged the public to “remain calm, vigilant, and to promptly report any suspicious movements or sightings of fleeing inmates to the nearest security formation.”

He added that preliminary investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances of the escape and reassured the public of the Service’s commitment to safety and security.
