EFCC arrests businesswoman Aisha Achimugu at Abuja airport

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday morning arrested businesswoman Aisha Achimugu at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, shortly after she arrived from London.

Achimugu, who had been declared wanted by the EFCC in March over allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering, was taken into custody around 5 a.m., according to sources familiar with the development.

Her arrest came just a day after the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice I.E. Ekwo, ordered her to report to the EFCC on Tuesday and appear before the court on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

Her legal counsel, Chief Chikaosolu Ojukwu, confirmed the arrest, stating that Achimugu voluntarily returned to Nigeria to comply with the court’s directive.

He, however, condemned the EFCC’s action, describing it as a violation of the court’s order and a disregard for due process.

Ojukwu further revealed that his client had begun a hunger strike in protest, saying: “She is a prisoner of conscience.”

As of press time, the EFCC had not released an official statement regarding the arrest.
