JUST IN; Over ten Worshippers kidnapped by gunmen during early morning attack

The Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of over 10 individuals during the early morning Muslim prayers in the Bushe community, located within the Sabon Birni Local Government Area in the state’s eastern senatorial district.

According to DSP Ahmed Rufai, the spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police, law enforcement agencies, in coordination with other security forces, are currently working to rescue those kidnapped during the attack.

A local source told Vanguard that suspected gunmen stormed the community on Thursday, January 6, 2025, while residents were observing the Subhi prayers at the mosque. The attackers abducted more than 10 worshippers, including the mosque’s Imam.

The source added that the gunmen had been terrorizing the community for some time, despite the presence of security personnel.

However, prompt action from Nigerian Army troops and other security agencies reportedly helped prevent the situation from escalating further.

A representative from the Sabon Birni B state constituency in the Sokoto House of Assembly confirmed the abduction, stating that at least 10 people had been taken. The lawmaker also praised the swift response from the security agencies involved.

Resident killed, others injured as Lakurawa terrorists strike again

A deadly attack by suspected terrorists on the Gulma community in Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi State has left one person dead and six others injured.

The assault occurred late Thursday night around 11:00 p.m., catching residents off guard while they were asleep.

While speaking to Daily Trust, Aliyu Sani Gulma, the Chairman of Argungu LGA, confirmed the tragic incident. He revealed that one individual was killed, and six others sustained gunshot wounds.

The injured victims have been rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Birnin Kebbi for treatment.

The assailants reportedly fled into the nearby forest after realizing that some locals had gathered to resist the attack. Gulma assured that he had notified security forces about the incident, prompting a swift response.

“Troops have been deployed to the area to safeguard the community and its residents,” he said.

Kebbi State Police Command’s spokesperson, CSP Nafi’u Abubakar, also confirmed the attack, adding that mobile police units had been sent to the affected village to assist in maintaining order.

This attack comes just two months after Senator Adamu Aliero, representing Kebbi Central, announced that the Nigerian military had successfully driven a terror group across the border into Niger Republic.

Aliero credited the efforts of Defense Minister Abubakar Badaru, the Chief of Defense Staff, and other key stakeholders in securing the region.

A stray bullet fired during a violent clash between rival cult groups, the Bobous and the Greenlanders, tragically claimed the life of a woman at the Swali Ultra Modern Market in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State.

The victim, identified only as Onorakpoma, was a market trader originally from the Emede community in Delta State’s Isoko South Local Government Area.

Witnesses to the incident recounted that Onorakpoma was rushed to a community in Southern Ijaw LGA, where efforts were made to remove the bullet, but she succumbed to her injuries before reaching her destination.

The tragic event, which took place on Monday, has sparked calls for heightened security measures around the market, particularly near the slaughter area, to prevent further loss of life.

In the aftermath, nearly all the shops along the Slaughter Road axis of Swali Market were closed on Tuesday morning, allegedly following orders from security forces.

However, as the day progressed, many traders cautiously reopened their shops and resumed business.

Bayelsa State Police spokesman, DSP Musa Mohammed, confirmed the incident and revealed that three suspects had been arrested in connection with the shooting. He assured that law enforcement had swiftly responded to the situation and brought calm to the Swali community.
