“You’re reckless” Ohanaeze Ndigbo slams Amaechi over remarks against President Tinubu
Rotimi Amaechi, the former governor of Rivers State and former minister of transportation, has come under heavy fire from the apex Igbo sociocultural organisation Ohanaeze Ndigbo for his divisive remarks against President Bola Tinubu.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo blasted Amaechi’s comments as a grave danger to Nigeria’s democratic fabric, including a demand for the deployment of “brutal force” to take over by 2027.
In a statement issued on Saturday in Kaduna, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Deputy President General of the organization, denounced Amaechi’s inflammatory rhetoric, emphasizing that the Igbo people would never support any effort to undermine the legitimacy of a democratically elected president.
“Amaechi’s reckless suggestion of ‘brutal force’ to seize power from President Tinubu by 2027 is an outright violation of the democratic principles, civility, and peace that we hold dear,” Isiguzoro declared.
The group also condemned Amaechi’s assertion that politicians must be prepared to “steal, maim, and kill” to retain power, warning that such statements pose a grave risk to the nation’s peace and stability.
“We strongly reject Amaechi’s incendiary comments targeting President Tinubu, which seek to destabilize the nation. The Ndigbo will never be part of any conspiracy to undermine an elected leader’s authority,” the statement continued.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo also expressed solidarity with the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, who had previously called on Amaechi to stop fueling public unrest.
“We echo Matawalle’s call for Amaechi to retract his divisive statements and stop inciting the public. The consequences of such actions cannot be ignored,” Isiguzoro added.
Reaffirming their loyalty to President Tinubu, Ohanaeze Ndigbo reiterated their commitment to promoting peace, stability, and good governance in Nigeria.
