Why we entered into peace pact with Terrorists, Bandits – Governor gives reasons

Uba Sani, the governor of Kaduna State, has vehemently defended his administration’s contentious choice to enter into a peace agreement with militants active in the state, emphasising that his main objective is to save lives and bring peace back to the area.

Governor Sani responded to the mounting criticism of the project in an interview with BBC Hausa Service, stating that no financial incentives were provided to the militants as part of the arrangement and that the decision was made following six months of serious discussion.

“If even one life were to be lost in Kaduna, it is better for me to pursue this peace pact,” Governor Sani said, emphasizing his moral responsibility.

“Otherwise, Almighty Allah will hold me accountable for not fulfilling my oath.”

The governor reiterated that his administration did not provide any monetary payment to the terrorists to secure the agreement.

“I want to assure you that not even one Naira was given to them,” he affirmed, aiming to clear doubts about the nature of the talks.

The peace process, he explained, was made possible through the efforts of traditional rulers and religious leaders, who facilitated six months of discreet negotiations.

This collaboration played a critical role in reaching the agreement, ensuring it was grounded in local and cultural context.

One key result of the peace initiative, according to Governor Sani, was the release of approximately 200 people who had been held captive by the terrorists.

This, he believes, demonstrates the sincerity of the pact and the potential for long-term stability in the region.

“The terrorists released the hostages to us. Now, business and farming activities are picking up again in our communities,” he noted, adding that the peace pact has already begun to make a visible difference in the state.

“That’s why I assure the communities we will keep praying and working to sustain this peace.”

Despite mixed reactions to the peace agreement, Governor Sani expressed confidence in its potential, citing the ongoing positive changes in the state. He reassured the people of Kaduna that his administration remains committed to ensuring safety, peace, and development for all residents.

The peace initiative, which remains a subject of debate, reflects the governor’s determination to prioritise the well-being of the people above all else, navigating the complex path to peace in a region grappling with insecurity.
