JUST IN; Govt clears air on threats to ban Traditional Worship– Commissioner
Mr Don Onyenji, the Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism in Anambra, says it is not true that the state government threatened to ban traditional worship.
Onyenji made the statement at a stakeholders meeting organised in partnership with ASHOKA Africa, a non-profit organsation and social change agent, in Awka on Thursday.
He said that Gov. Charles Soludo only called for the registration of all traditional religious leaders and custodians of shrines in the state.
The commissioner described religion as a collection of social and cultural systems involving core beliefs, practices, morals that were needed in human society.
“The governor wants to have that compilation as a way of discouraging crime. Let’s not forget that some people who do unlawful businesses patronise these places.
“Armed robbers, fraudsters, kidnappers and other criminals go to native doctors and shrines to seek for powers to do evil,” he said.
Onyenji said that the activities of some native doctors and custodians of shrines in the state encouraged criminality.
He said that any native doctor or shrine worshipper found to be preparing charms for robbers or fortifying kidnappers would be prosecuted.
Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, the Commissioner for Education, said that the partnership with ASHOKA Africa was aimed at promoting social behaviour reformation among the youth.
Represented by Dr Ify Agbaizu, the Permanent Secretary, Chuma-Udeh said that the correct orientation about core Igbo values should be given to the younger generation in order to put them on the right track.
“We must preach the values of hard work, respect and honesty. This will save the youth from indulging in the social ills that are rampant in the society today,” she said.
She urged youth in the state to imbibe good social behaviours and hard work as they grew in life, saying,” nothing good comes without hard work”
Mr Okechukwu Uzoechina, the Leader, ASHOKA Africa delegation to the meeting, said that the organisation’s “Everyone is a Change Maker”vision was a social transformation tool needed in human society.
“We foresee a world where everyone has the confidence, freedom and support to identify and design solutions for the common good of the society.
“A world where people are equipped to tackle challenges, and to create a better future in both small and bold ways,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting also attracted the attendance students drawn from select secondary schools in the state.
Speaking to NAN, Miss Makuochukwu Umeh, the Head Girl, Anglican Girls Secondary School, Awka, described the engagement as enriching and well thought-out.
“We all are grateful to be part of the programme, we have learnt a lot from the resource persons, if for nothing, I havee learnt that quick and illegal wealth is not good
“I also learnt that farming, craft making and other lawful engagements are good and dignified sources of making wealth,” she said.(NAN)

Former Minister allegedly approved contract for Son-in-law’s firm– witness opens up in 2.8b fraud case
A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama, Abuja, yesterday heard how former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika approved contracts to a company – Al Buraq Global Investment Limited – in which his daughter, Fatima, and son-in-law, Jalal Sule Hamma, have interests.
A former Director of Procurement in the ministry, Musa Odiniyan, said this while testifying as the fifth prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of Sirika, Fatima, Jalal, and Al Buraq Global on a six-count charge bordering on corrupt practices.
In the charge, the prosecution alleged, among others, that Sirika used his “position to confer unfair advantage upon Al Buraq Global Investment Limited, whose alter ego, Fatima Hadi Sirika and Jalal Sule Hamma, are your daughter and son-in-law, respectively, by using your position to influence the award to them, the contract for the Apron Extension at Katsina Airport for the sum of N1,498,300,750”.
Fatima is said to be a staff member of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd, while Jalal Sule Hamma is described as an employee of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
During his cross-examination yesterday by Sirika’s lawyer, Michael Numa (SAN), Odiniyan insisted that for a contract to be executed, the minister must have approved it.
When asked about the role of the minister in the award of contracts, the witness said the former minister gave the final approval before the implementation of the contracts approved by the Ministerial Tenders Board (MTB).

Nigerian Governor slams FCT Minister Wike, calls him incoherent, transactional politician
Governor of Bauchi State Bala Mohammed has attacked the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Woke over a media chat in which purportedly took a swipe at the Bauchi State governor and Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a press statement made available to Vanguard by his Media Adviser, Muhktar Gidado, he said that Wike thrives on drama and divisiveness.
“The attention of Sen. Bala Mohammed, the Executive Governor of Bauchi State and Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, has been drawn to the latest disjointed and bombastic media chat by Chief Nyesom Wike, the Honorable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
‘We aren’t just a band of blind musicians; we have journalists, teachers and computer…0:00 / 0:00
“In his characteristic style, Chief Wike launched into his now-predictable tirade, marked by contradictions, grandstanding, and a perplexing display of loyalty that seems to shift with the wind.
“While Wike’s incoherence often makes it difficult to discern any substantive points, Sen. Bala Mohammed finds it necessary to respond to a few specific remarks that distort facts and aim to undermine the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)—the very platform that gave Wike his political rise.
“Chief Wike’s ascendancy in politics is a testament to the opportunities provided by the PDP. Yet, he now gleefully undermines the very foundation that nurtured him,” he said in the statement.
The governor lamented that Wike “who owes so much to a party that stood by him in his political journey has chosen to be a willing tool in its denigration.
“His recent media outburst was yet another reminder of his transactional approach to politics, where personal ambition eclipses loyalty, principles, and collective interests.
“Unlike Wike, who thrives on drama and divisiveness, Sen. Bala Mohammed has always understood that politics is not a game of self-serving theatrics but a platform to serve the public good.
“Wike’s erratic behavior and opportunistic alliances expose him as an unreliable and fair-weather friend—traits that alienate even those who once stood by him.
