Maj.- Gen. Godwin Mutkut has assumed duties as the new Force Commander of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), following a handover at the Headquarters, N’Djamena, Chad, on Thursday.

Mutkut takes over from Maj.-Gen. Ibrahim Ali, who led the task force through significant milestones in its fight against terrorism and efforts to strengthen regional security across the Lake Chad Basin.

In his inaugural address, Maj.-Gen. Mutkut expressed gratitude to the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) and the contributing member states for the trust placed in him.

“I am honoured to take on this responsibility and committed to working closely with all stakeholders to consolidate our gains and address the evolving security challenges in the Lake Chad Basin,” he said.

He pledged to build on the achievements of his predecessors in advancing peace and stability in the region, which has been plagued by the activities of terrorist groups.

In his valedictory remarks, Maj.-Gen. Ali congratulated his successor and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the MNJTF to greater success.

He highlighted Maj.-Gen. Mutkut’s operational experience as a former Commander of Sector 3 MNJTF, General Officer Commanding 8 Division Nigerian Army, and Force Commander of Operation Hadarin Daji in Nigeria.

“He understands the security dynamics within the Lake Chad Basin region and will bring his best in the campaign against terrorism,” Ali said.

He said that Maj.-Gen. Mutkut, a distinguished senior Nigerian Army officer, is renowned for his extensive operational expertise and exemplary leadership.

“He is noted for his doggedness in operations, having commanded the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, which has been pivotal in combating terrorists and bandits in Northwest Nigeria,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the MNJTF, established by the LCBC member states of Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria, with support from international partners, continues to play a critical role in the fight against terrorism in the Lake Chad Basin. (NAN)

Former Minister allegedly approved contract for Son-in-law’s firm– witness opens up in 2.8b fraud case

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama, Abuja, yesterday heard how former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika approved contracts to a company – Al Buraq Global Investment Limited – in which his daughter, Fatima, and son-in-law, Jalal Sule Hamma, have interests.

A former Director of Procurement in the ministry, Musa Odiniyan, said this while testifying as the fifth prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of Sirika, Fatima, Jalal, and Al Buraq Global on a six-count charge bordering on corrupt practices.

In the charge, the prosecution alleged, among others, that Sirika used his “position to confer unfair advantage upon Al Buraq Global Investment Limited, whose alter ego, Fatima Hadi Sirika and Jalal Sule Hamma, are your daughter and son-in-law, respectively, by using your position to influence the award to them, the contract for the Apron Extension at Katsina Airport for the sum of N1,498,300,750”.

Fatima is said to be a staff member of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd, while Jalal Sule Hamma is described as an employee of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

During his cross-examination yesterday by Sirika’s lawyer, Michael Numa (SAN), Odiniyan insisted that for a contract to be executed, the minister must have approved it.

When asked about the role of the minister in the award of contracts, the witness said the former minister gave the final approval before the implementation of the contracts approved by the Ministerial Tenders Board (MTB).

Nigerian Governor slams FCT Minister Wike, calls him incoherent, transactional politician

Governor of Bauchi State Bala Mohammed has attacked the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Woke over a media chat in which purportedly took a swipe at the Bauchi State governor and Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a press statement made available to Vanguard by his Media Adviser, Muhktar Gidado, he said that Wike thrives on drama and divisiveness.

“The attention of Sen. Bala Mohammed, the Executive Governor of Bauchi State and Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, has been drawn to the latest disjointed and bombastic media chat by Chief Nyesom Wike, the Honorable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

‘We aren’t just a band of blind musicians; we have journalists, teachers and computer…0:00 / 0:00

“In his characteristic style, Chief Wike launched into his now-predictable tirade, marked by contradictions, grandstanding, and a perplexing display of loyalty that seems to shift with the wind.

“While Wike’s incoherence often makes it difficult to discern any substantive points, Sen. Bala Mohammed finds it necessary to respond to a few specific remarks that distort facts and aim to undermine the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)—the very platform that gave Wike his political rise.

“Chief Wike’s ascendancy in politics is a testament to the opportunities provided by the PDP. Yet, he now gleefully undermines the very foundation that nurtured him,” he said in the statement.

The governor lamented that Wike “who owes so much to a party that stood by him in his political journey has chosen to be a willing tool in its denigration.

“His recent media outburst was yet another reminder of his transactional approach to politics, where personal ambition eclipses loyalty, principles, and collective interests.

“Unlike Wike, who thrives on drama and divisiveness, Sen. Bala Mohammed has always understood that politics is not a game of self-serving theatrics but a platform to serve the public good.

“Wike’s erratic behavior and opportunistic alliances expose him as an unreliable and fair-weather friend—traits that alienate even those who once stood by him.
