Angry mob murders woman in gruesome manner over allegation of witchcraf
The Benue State Police Command has apprehended two individuals in connection with the brutal murder of an elderly woman in Egba village, Agatu Local Government Area, allegedly over accusations of witchcraft.
The suspects, identified as 50-year-old Bako and 40-year-old Oyaje Clement, were arrested following the tragic incident that took place on Christmas Eve.
In a statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, the authorities condemned the crime, describing it as part of a growing trend of mob justice in the region, often targeting elderly individuals accused of witchcraft.
The police spokesperson emphasized the disturbing nature of the incident and reiterated the command’s commitment to addressing such acts of vigilantism.
The murder has sparked outrage in the community, with residents calling for swift justice and greater awareness to prevent similar occurrences.
“Another worrisome situation in the state is the case of people taking the law into their own hands, particularly young people killing the elderly for alleged case of witchcraft.
“On December 24, 2024, around 7:00 p.m., we received information about the killing of an aged woman over allegations of witchcraft in Egba village, Agatu LGA.
“Following investigations, two suspects were arrested in connection to the case.”
