The arrest took place on November 15, 2024, following an investigation initiated by the Zone Six Human Rights Unit of the police, which acted upon a petition regarding the matter.

During an interview with Daily Post, Umaru denied the allegations, struggling to explain how his daughter became pregnant while he had been separated from her mother for several years.

The investigation was prompted by concerns raised by Amina’s aunt, Aisha, who noticed significant changes in the girl’s physical condition.

After taking her to a hospital for examination, a pregnancy test confirmed that the 15-year-old was nine weeks pregnant. In her testimony, Amina accused her father of initiating inappropriate relations with her at a hotel in 2023 and claimed he threatened her life if she revealed their secret.

Following these claims, police conducted a further examination of Amina at the Police Hospital in Calabar, which corroborated the initial findings from her aunt’s report.

The manager of Last Motor Hotel confirmed that he had seen Umaru and Amina visiting the hotel together but was unaware of their familial relationship.

In response to the situation, SP Nelson Okpabi, the Zone Six Police Public Relations Officer, stated that Umaru would face court proceedings once the investigation concludes and if sufficient evidence is found against him.

The police have urged parents and guardians to closely supervise their children and remain vigilant against potential predators. Additionally, they called on those in the hospitality sector to conduct thorough checks on guests and report any suspicious behavior to law enforcement for immediate action.
