IGP orders manhunt for killers of three Police Officers while on duty

The police have initiated a manhunt for those responsible for the killings of three officers within a week in Lagos and Edo states, pledging to intensify efforts against jungle justice and attacks on law enforcement personnel.

On Saturday, a mob killed Assistant Superintendent of Police Augustine Osupayi in Lagos.

Earlier in the week, gunmen targeted a policeman at a quarry site in Edo, just days after local residents burned down a police station, resulting in the death of one officer and the immolation of several suspects.

In a statement, Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi, condemned this brutality, describing it as a grave betrayal of justice and due process.

He said: “The Police condemn the act of arson which led to the burning of some suspects in police custody, and the subsequent setting ablaze of police barracks, patrol vans and the Divisional Police Station in Agenebode, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State on Sunday, 13th of October 2024.

“In the above case, members of the public alleged that the police were trying to pervert justice by taking into custody some suspected kidnappers and armed robbers who have been accused of terrorising the people of the community in Edo State.

“The main suspect was arrested and almost lynched by the community members before he was rescued by the police.

“His arrest led the police to arrest three additional suspects.

“The rescue and detention of the suspects didn’t go down well with the community members who later mobilised in large numbers and attacked the police station, killed the suspects by burning, and scorched down the station and properties therein.

“The erroneous perception of the community members that the police would set free the suspects was absolutely wrong and quite unfair.

“The police never intended to pervert justice in the case, more so that they have through painstaking investigation arrested three other suspects fingered in the criminal act.
“In another development, a police team trying to prevent the execution of jungle justice was gruesomely attacked which led to the killing of a police officer, ASP Augustine Osupayi, attached to the Lagos State Command, by a group of violent mob on Saturday in Agege, Lagos State.

“The police team had raced down to the rescue of a driver who was alleged to have accidentally knocked down a motorcycle rider to death.”
Adejobi added that a group of motorcycle rider attacked the driver, who was eventually rescued by the police.
He said the rescue did not go down well with the riders who descended on the police team and killed the ASP.
He added: “These are very few cases out of many incidents recorded across the country.
“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, sympathises with the families of the departed souls and directs the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) to investigate these incidents and bring all persons found wanting to face the full wrath of the law.
“While the Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in upholding the principles of rule of law, members of the public are urged to shun acts of jungle justice, and destruction emphasising that it serves only to destabilise the foundation of legal authority and public safety.
“It is criminal, illogical, and unjustifiable, irrespective of the grievances held by the perpetrators.”
Authorities confirmed the death of a police inspector following an assault by gunmen targeting quarry workers in the Ihivbe-Ogben area of Edo State.
Police spokesman Moses Yamu reported that one officer was killed, while an expatriate and another police officer assigned to the expatriate sustained injuries.
The officer was stationed at the quarry located in the Owan East Local Government Area.
It is believed that the gunmen ambushed the workers as they were returning to their base camp on Thursday evening, opening fire on them.

JUST IN; IGP talks though, says killing of Police personnel will not be tolerated by NPF anymore

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olukayode Egbetokun, on Friday warned that attacks on police officers will no longer be tolerated.

Speaking in Enugu during a one-day official visit to the state’s police headquarters, Egbetokun expressed concern over the rising number of police officers killed by criminals.

He emphasized that any form of assault or killing of police personnel would be met with proportional response.

The IGP declared that the force is determined to eliminate crime and criminal activity this year, ensuring that criminals driven out of the Southeast will not return to perpetrate further violence.
The police chief stated that they would do everything within their power to ensure criminals face severe consequences this year, emphasizing their focus and determination to accomplish their goals.

“We’ll not tolerate any assault on our police officers, not to talk of killing. Any assault on policemen is criminal. It is an assault on police IGP. We are not going to take it kindly on any assault on our officers.

“We’ll not tolerate it anymore. In 2025, we are going to say no to assault on our police. We are going to say capital no to killing of our men.

“This year 2025, we are going to approach the year with determination. Determination to stamp out criminals. The ones that have been chased out will not be allowed to return,” he said and assured the Enugu State Police Command that he would support them with every resource and modern security gadgets.

“I am going to support the Command with everything and resources at our disposal so that the achievements you have recorded will not be tampered with and you record more achievements.

“In this year, we going to vigorously pursue our police vision for Nigeria. We shall emphasize professionalism. We shall emphasize ethical conduct of our officers. We shall emphasize training and retraining of officers.

“We’ll equip you with modern policing tools to discharge your duties effectively,” he added.

The IGP said he would make sure that the welfare of officers was taken serious, noting that, “no IGP will neglect the welfare of the officers.”
Earlier, the Police Chief paid a visit to Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, where he praised the governor’s efforts in ensuring the security of lives and property, as well as his contributions to the overall development of the state.

“I want to start by expressing our profound appreciation to the Governor of Enugu State for the support that you have given to the Nigeria Police Force in our quest to provide and ensure Peace and Security in Enugu State. Your commitment to our shared goal of a safer Nigeria is truly commendable.

“You are doing great things in Enugu State. The report I have been getting in Enugu has been truly good. I am very happy and glad to hear the force of work you are doing in the state to ensure that the people of Enugu State enjoy the dividends of democracy.

“Importantly, I congratulate you on your giant strides in the area of security and in other areas.

“I am pleased to note that the collaboration between the Nigeria Police and Enugu State Government has continued to yield excellent results; and we are determined to build on this success.

“In this year 2025, I want to let you know that we are committed to pursuing our policing vision more vigorously. We will prioritise community engagement. We will prioritise professionalism and emphasis ethical conduct of our officers.

“I am very confident that with your support we are going to overcome all the challenges that we are facing presently and ensure that Nigeria becomes safer for all of us,” he said.

In response, Governor Mbah expressed his gratitude to the IGP for the robust support provided to his administration in the fight against crime and the protection of lives and property.
“We cannot thank you enough for the interest you have shown and continued to show in the security matters of Enugu State.

“You may not have been here before now, but from the outset, we have felt your presence here because you have provided us with all the support, both material and human, that we need to fight the challenges of insecurity to a standstill.

“We had a meeting on how to address the security challenges in Enugu and without sparing any time, you provided us with all the support to ensure we have special forces here. You provided us with the equipment.

“This is very important to us because the plan we have to grow our economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion could only happen with security in place.

“Businesses can deal with financial risk and commercial risk, but cannot deal with security risks; which is why we thought that for that growth to materialise, we will provide security. So, you have been a very strong pillar of support to the government,” he stated.

Stop misuse of IGP’s name, on illegal operations – NPF warns Police personnel ⁸

The Nigeria Police Force has expressed concern over the misuse of the name and office of the Inspector-General of Police to perpetrate illegal acts by its officers.

According to the Force, the persistent unprofessional conduct of a few Police officers undermines the standards and reputation of the Nigeria Police Force.

This was contained in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Saturday, December 28.

The statement reads: “The Nigeria Police Force is concerned about the persistent unprofessional conduct of a few Police officers which undermines the standards and reputation of the Nigeria Police Force. Despite repeated warnings and disciplinary actions taken against those who have been exposed, some officers are still engaging in these shameful acts that erode public trust.

“Even more alarming is the fraudulent use of the name and office of the Inspector-General of Police to perpetrate these illegal acts. The intention behind this tactic is to intimidate victims into believing that the IGP is aware, and approves of their illegal activities. As a result, victims are often deterred from reporting these incidents to higher authorities.

“We urge members of the public to report any misconduct by Police Officers to their superiors, the Heads of the Complaint Response Units (CRU) in their states or the Commissioner of Police in the state. Contact information for the CRU in all states has been published previously.

“Members of the public are therefore advised to exercise caution when approached by officers or individuals claiming connections with the IGP or any senior officer for the purpose of influence or favour. In such instances, we urge you to immediately report such cases to the Nigeria Police Force via: DCP Akin Fakorede, Head, IGP Monitoring Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja – 08184077076; ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja – 08037168147; CSP Taiwo Oyewale, Head, IGP Special Investigation Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja – 08069318238; SP Sherriff Lawal, ADC (Aide-de-Camp) to the IGP – 08094712605.”

JUST IN; IGP orders full investigation into allegations of Police brutality

The Inspector-General of Police, Dr Olukayode Egbetokun, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the allegations of police culpability during the Aug. 1 #EndBadGovernance protests.

The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said this in a statement on Monday in Abuja.

Adejobi said the move was in response to a report by Amnesty International accusing the Nigeria Police Force of culpability in the death, arrest, and use of excessive force on protesters.

According to Adejobi, the investigation aims to identify any deviations from the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and rules of engagement.

“Commissioners of Police in the affected states have been directed to submit detailed reports within one week.

“The Nigeria Police Force has maintained that it operated within established rules of engagement, providing security for peaceful protesters throughout the protest.”

The police spokesman described the allegations by Amnesty International as unfounded, misleading, and inconsistent with reports from affected police commands.

Adejobi emphasised that the police did not fire live ammunition or cause the death of any protester.

He stated that officers demonstrated professionalism and adherence to constitutional and international standards, in spite of being subjected to attacks and injuries.

The investigation’s findings will be crucial in determining the next course of action.

The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding citizens’ fundamental rights, promoting the rule of law, and improving operational standards.(NAN)
