2027 Tinubu’s Running Mate: Presidency finally breaks silence on Shettima’s fate

The Presidency has stated that President Bola Tinubu will name his running mate for the 2027 presidential election only after he formally accepts the All Progressives Congress (APC) nomination during its 2026 convention.

This was revealed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in an interview with *Daily Trust* on Thursday.

Responding to concerns over Vice President Kashim Shettima’s noticeable absence from a series of endorsements backing Tinubu’s re-election, Onanuga dismissed rumours of a rift between the two, calling such claims baseless and without merit.

“When I read the report, I dismissed it as a non issue. In a presidential system, the candidate emerges first and then selects a running mate. That’s what happened under Buhari – he was nominated first and later picked his running mate. You don’t do both at once.

“Once INEC releases the timetable, the party convention will hold, and if the president is nominated again, he will choose his run-ning mate,” he said.
