JUST IN: New IGP inaugurates committee to draft framework for state police implementation

Tunji Disu, the newly appointed Inspector-General of Police, has set in motion plans for the implementation of state police with the inauguration of a seven-member committee tasked with designing its operational blueprint.

The committee, inaugurated on Wednesday, is chaired by Professor Olu Ogunsakin, a scholar of police studies, and is expected to lay the groundwork for how state-controlled policing structures would function within Nigeria’s broader security architecture.

At the inauguration, Disu charged the panel with developing a comprehensive operational framework to guide the establishment, coordination and supervision of state police formations.

He directed members to examine critical components including recruitment standards, training models, funding and resource allocation, as well as accountability and oversight mechanisms to prevent abuse and ensure professionalism.

According to the IGP, decentralising policing responsibilities would allow state governments and local authorities to respond more effectively to unique security threats within their domains.

The move aligns with repeated assurances by Bola Ahmed Tinubu that his administration would pursue the creation of state police as part of broader efforts to confront Nigeria’s persistent insecurity challenges.

While advocates argue that state policing would enhance grassroots intelligence and rapid response, critics have previously raised concerns about potential political misuse and funding constraints.
