Ramadan; Govts approve reduction in working hours for Civil Servants

Gov. Nasir Idris of Kebbi has approved a reduction in official working hours for civil servants in the holy month of Ramadan.

The approval is contained in a statement issued by Alhaji Awwal Manu-Dogondaji, the Commissioner for Establishment, Pension and Training in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday.

According to the statement, civil servants in the state will now work from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Fridays.

It added that normal working hours would resume after Ramadan.

Manu-Dogondaji urged citizens to remain steadfast in prayers for lasting peace and stability in Kebbi and Nigeria.

Gov. Umar Namadi of Jigawa has also approved reduction of working hours for state civil servants to honour the 2025 Ramadan fast.

The approval is in a statement signed by the state’s Head of Service, Mr Muhammad Dagaceri, on Tuesday in Dutse.

He stated that “civil servants in the state will report to the office at 9 a.m. and close at 3 p.m. from Mondays to Thursdays, throughout the Ramadan period.

“On Fridays, the civil servants will report at 9 a.m. and close at 1 p.m.’’

The head of service explained that the gesture is to provide opportunities for civil servants to fully engage in spiritual activities associated with the holy month.

“It is hoped that civil servants in the state will use the Ramadan period to pray for God’s guidance and blessings for our state and the country in general,” Dagaceri added.

Muslims worldwide have started observing the 29 or 30 days of the fasting month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Lunar calendar.

While observing the dawn-to-dusk fast, Muslims are to refrain from eating, drinking and intimate activities throughout the period.

Ramadan is the month when the first verses of the Holy Qur’an were revealed to Prophet Muhammad, more than 1,400 years ago.(NAN)

Mrs Florence Okpe, the Spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, confirmed the incident in a statement in Abeokuta.

Okpe explained that the accident which occurred at about 1:00p.m, involved a Mazda bus marked KJA 949 YJ.

The FRSC spokesperson said that the accident was caused by fire outbreak in the vehicle, explaining that the vehicle was also having a filled gas cylinder in it, which led to explosion.

She added that 21 people were involved in the accident, 16 died with three sustaining varying degrees of injuries.

“The genders of the victims could not be ascertained at the scene because they were burnt beyond recognition.

“A total of 16 people were killed in the crash while three sustained varying degrees of injuries,” she said.

Okpe added that the injured victims were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta, while the corpses were still at the scene waiting for evacuation.

“The Sector Commander, Akinwumi Fasakin, quickly moved to the crash scene with his team for rescue operation but he was not pleased with the occurrence.

“The driver should have objected to carrying a cylinder filled with gas,” she said.

She advised motorists that highly flammable items should be transported with care and by designated vehicles driven by trained drivers only.

Okpe urged motorists and passengers to always put safety first while on the roads. (NAN)

Fake Military officer arrested arraigned by Police

The Police in Osun on Tuesday arraigned a 30-year-old fake Naval officer, Oyetunji Samuel, before an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court, for an alleged impersonation and assault of a 13-year-old girl.

The Police Prosecutor, ASP Olusegun Elisha, told the court that the defendant committed the offense sometime between the months of February and March within Osogbo metropolis.

Elisha said the defendant who allegedly claimed to be a naval officer had assaulted a teenager for reasons unknown .
He said the offense contravened sections 484 and 351 of the criminal code cap 34 Vol.1, laws of Osun,2002 .

The defendant pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of impersonation and assault against him.

The defense counsel, Mr Olatunbosun Oladipupo, had requested the court to grant his client bail in the most liberal terms.

The Magistrate, Mrs O. Daramola, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 and two sureties in the likesum.

Daramola said the sureties must reside within the court jurisdiction with evidence of tax payment and passport size photographs, attached with an affidavit of means.

The case was adjourned to May 6 for hearing. (NAN)

BREAKING; President Tinubu approves appointment of new Accountant General of the Federation

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Shamsedeen Ogunjimi as the new Accountant General of the Federation after a rigorous selection processes.

His appointment, approved on Tuesday, takes effect from March 7, 2025, the same day the incumbent Oluwatoyin Madehin will retire, Mr Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Spokesman, said in a statement.

Ogunjimi, 57, was first named as Madehin’s successor last December.

“A selection committee later picked him through a competitive, rigorous, and merit-based process involving Directors of Accounts in the Federal Civil Service.

“The committee conducted the process through three stages: a written assessment, an ICT proficiency test, and oral interview.

“The selection process underscores President Tinubu’s commitment to promoting transparency, excellence, and competence in key public service positions,” said the statement.

Ogunjimi graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy.

He also obtained a Master’s in Accounting and Finance from the University of Lagos.

He is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria.

Tinubu congratulated Ogunjimi on his appointment and urged him to discharge his duties in the service of Nigeria with integrity, professionalism, and dedication to Nigeria’s service. (NAN)
