NEC under Vice President Shettima sidesteps decision on State Police yet again

Fresh uncertainty surrounds the issue of state policing, as the National Economic Council (NEC), chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, failed to deliberate on the matter during its meeting on Thursday at the Presidential Villa.

Despite previous assurances that a final decision would be made, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri confirmed that state policing was not discussed, citing time constraints caused by other lengthy national presentations.

Earlier, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani had claimed all 36 states supported the idea and that a formal resolution was imminent. However, that decision now appears stalled.

During the NEC session, governors observed a minute’s silence for victims of recent violent attacks in Benue, Plateau, and Kwara states, where nearly 200 people were killed.

The attacks, linked to suspected herdsmen, have affected at least 22 states under the current administration. Plateau and Benue were hardest hit, with over 100 people killed in each state and thousands displaced.

The violence continues to fuel calls for a state policing system, but a conclusive federal stance remains elusive.
