You can’t lead Nigeria – Labour Party Chairman tells Peter Obi

Factional National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Callistus Okafor, has declared that*Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, lacks the capacity to lead Nigeria, citing his failure to address internal crises within the party.

Okafor made the statement on Thursday during a press conference in Abuja, where he formally announced his withdrawal from the Labour Party, alongside members of his faction.

Acording to him, the decision followed extensive consultations with his group’s National Working Committee and National Executive Council, who agreed it was time to leave a party plagued by protracted leadership battles.

“We have taken time to assess the unresolved crisis within the Labour Party, which has dragged on for over seven years. The situation has become untenable,” he said.

Okafor claimed that five million supporters were leaving with him to join a new non-partisan, socio-political movement called Team Wazobia Nigeria, which he said would be formally unveiled soon.

He blamed Peter Obi for not stepping up to reconcile warring factions in the LP after the 2023 general elections.

“Peter Obi had the opportunity to unite the party but chose to support Julius Abure, who later became his political adversary. If he couldn’t resolve internal party disputes, how can he handle the complexities of running a country?” Okafor asked.

He described the Labour Party’s internal turmoil as unhealthy and insisted his faction had no choice but to chart a new course outside the party.
