Wife allegedly sets Military Officer on fire, Nigerian Army commences murder probe

The Nigerian Army’s 2 Brigade, based in Akwa Ibom State, has opened an investigation into the shocking death of one of its officers, Lieutenant Samson Haruna, who was reportedly killed in a domestic incident involving his wife, Retyit Samson Haruna, a trained nurse.

The tragic event was confirmed in an official statement released Tuesday night by the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Lawal Muhammad, in Uyo.

According to the statement, the Army has “strongly condemned” the “gruesome murder” and expressed its condolences to the bereaved family, urging the public to remain calm as the investigation unfolds.

Lieutenant Haruna, who served as the Regimental Medical Officer of 6 Battalion, died from injuries sustained in a fire allegedly set by his wife during a domestic dispute at their home in Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa, on September 22, 2025.

Preliminary findings suggest the altercation was sparked by a family disagreement that escalated, leading to Mrs. Haruna allegedly setting household items on fire. The flames quickly spread, fatally injuring the officer, who was caught in the blaze.

Initially treated and stabilised at the Battalion Medical Facility, Lieutenant Haruna was later transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.

Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Tuesday.

In its statement, the Army emphasised its position, saying: “The Nigerian Army strongly condemns this act of domestic violence, recognising the imperative of peaceful coexistence and respect within families. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of Lieutenant Haruna.”

It added: “The Nigerian Army will continue to advocate healthy relationships, address domestic violence, and foster a culture of respect and dialogue within families and communities.”

The Army further appealed for patience and restraint from all concerned: “The Nigerian Army is calling for all parties to remain calm while awaiting the outcome of the military police investigation.”

It was revealed that the couple had been married for just under five months before the fatal incident.
