Tragedy: Female officer killed by NSCDC vehicle during simulation exercise
A female officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has died after being struck by one of the agency’s operational vehicles during a simulation exercise in Abuja.
The incident, which occurred during what officials described as a coordinated show-of-force drill, was captured in a video now circulating on social media. The footage shows the officer being knocked down and run over by a patrol vehicle as it made a turn within the exercise formation. The vehicle eventually came to a halt as colleagues and onlookers rushed to the scene in an attempt to rescue her.
Eyewitness video indicates that personnel at the scene quickly lifted the vehicle in a desperate bid to pull her out before emergency responders arrived. She was subsequently evacuated from the scene, but later succumbed to her injuries.
Confirming the development on Saturday, NSCDC spokesperson Afolabi Babawale told TheCable via telephone that the corps had lost one of its personnel during the drill. The identity of the deceased had not been officially disclosed as of the time of filing this report.
“It is true we lost a personnel during the simulation exercise. Our senior officers are on their way to the residence of the deceased to pay our condolences,” Babawale said.
He added that the corps had commenced internal procedures in response to the tragedy and would issue a comprehensive statement to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Babawale further assured that the forthcoming statement would outline the steps being taken by the agency following the fatal accident.
The incident has since generated reactions online, particularly over safety protocols during paramilitary drills and simulation exercises. The NSCDC is yet to provide additional details pending the outcome of its internal review.
