Youths decry soaring death toll in the north, says “enough is enough”
The Concerned Christian Youth Forum has voiced deep concern over the ongoing violence in Benue and Plateau states, condemning the surge in mass burials triggered by repeated attacks from armed bandits and criminal gangs.
Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, the group’s Convener, James Paul Adama, described the escalating bloodshed in the North Central region as a “national tragedy,” warning that the persistent loss of innocent lives threatens the unity and survival of Nigeria.
“We are weary of burying our people week after week,” Adama said. “This bloodshed must end, and those behind it must face justice immediately.”
He criticised the government’s sluggish response to the deteriorating security situation and urged security agencies to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable communities.
While acknowledging the bravery of security forces on the ground, the Forum emphasized the need for swift and decisive intervention by the Federal Government to restore peace and stability.
“This crisis goes beyond Benue and Plateau; it’s about safeguarding the soul of our nation. Every Nigerian has the right to live in peace and dignity,” Adama stated.
The group also appealed to religious bodies, civil society organizations, and international human rights groups to raise their voices against what they called the “ongoing carnage and silent genocide” in the Middle Belt.
The Forum called on the government to prioritise humanitarian aid and the reconstruction of affected communities.
