Six female prisoners murdered by inmates

The National Penitentiary Institute disclosed that Gang members at a female prison near the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa, have allegedly killed six female prisoners.

It was reported by INP, that the suspects broke through the gate and the roof of a building and attacked the women at the gymnasium, where the women were staying, and murdered them.

However it was reported that one prisoner had already caused a diversion by allegedly setting fire on a dormitory where two inmates that were said to have been tested positive for the ravaging COVID-19.

Firefighters put out the fire but two women were injured.


Security forces “reestablished order and control” before beginning an investigation, INP said.

The gang members entered “the nursery, they don’t even respect children because they say they’re MS-13,” one woman said, referring to the Mara Salvatrucha criminal gang that is active in North and Central America.

“When they want to they come and throw stones at us and tell us they’re going to kill us, that they’re going to set fire to us. We’re tired and the director does nothing,” added the woman.

In a country that has recorded more than 3700 cases of the deadly virus with 174 deaths, the President of the Prisoners’ Association, Delma Ordonez, has complained that the coronavirus lockdown has caused psychological problems for inmates, with the case of a dead inmate reported already with about 20 cases confirmed in two of the 30 prisons that holds more than 21,000 inmates.
