Saudi Arabia reveals number of Pilgrims that died during 2024 Hajj

During the recent Hajj season, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Health, Fahd Al-Jalajel, has reported 1,301 deaths, with 83% of these fatalities involving unauthorised pilgrims who endured extensive walking in direct sunlight without adequate shelter or comfort. Among the deceased were elderly and chronically ill individuals.

Al-Jalajel emphasised the Ministry’s efforts in raising awareness about heat stress dangers and preventive measures. He extended condolences, stating, “May God forgive and have mercy on the deceased. Our heartfelt condolences go to their families. May God accept their deeds and grant them recompense for their suffering.”

The minister assured that all necessary procedures for identification, burial, and honoring the deceased were followed meticulously, despite initial challenges with personal information and identification documents.

Regarding health services, Al-Jalajel noted the successful management of heat stress cases during Hajj, with ongoing care provided to affected individuals. He highlighted the absence of epidemics or widespread diseases during the season.

In media interviews, Al-Jalajel expressed confidence in the pilgrims’ overall health despite high temperatures, attributing this to swift health responses and the support of Hajj security forces.

The Kingdom provided over 465,000 specialized treatment services, including 141,000 to unauthorized pilgrims. Preemptive health services, such as early detection, vaccinations, and medical care, were initiated at entry points.

Healthcare provisions encompassed advanced treatments like open-heart surgeries, cardiac catheterization, and dialysis, with extensive ambulance services and air operations ensuring prompt medical assistance across Saudi Arabia.

Looking ahead, Al-Jalajel announced that next year would mark the final Hajj during summer months, with a 17-year hiatus planned to avoid intense heat conditions for pilgrims.
