Protests, anger as trailer crushes two Pupils, Okada rider in fatal accident

At Zango-Daji area of Lokoja in Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State on Thursday, an articulated vehicle crushed two pupils and a commercial motorbike rider, better known as Okada, to death.

It was gathered that the event happened in the early hours of the morning, when students were returning to school in the region.

According to an eyewitness, the accident occurred on a rough stretch of road while the okada driver transporting the two pupils to school was attempting to manoeuvre out of a pothole when he unexpectedly slid into the lane of a driving truck.

The truck smashed the bike rider and his two passengers to death on the spot, according to the eyewitness.


Thereafter, angry youths rushed to the place and made an attempt to set the the truck ablaze, but were prevented by members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and other security agents.

It was also learned that protesting youths barricaded the road for hours, preventing other road users from using the route for the most of the day, resulting in traffic jam.

When contacted, SP William Ovye-Aya, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Kogi Police Command, verified the event and said the command had begun an investigation into the cause of the accident.

Mr Stephen Dawulung, the state’s Federal Road Safety Corps Sector Commander, further confirmed that his troops had placed the victims’ bodies at the Federal Medical Centre mortuary in Lokoja.
