Police Officer, Student arrested over Suspected Cult related activities
The Rivers State Police Command has arrested two individuals, a serving police officer and a university student, for alleged involvement in cult-related activities during a final-year signing-out celebration at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT).
In a statement released on Friday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that the suspects were apprehended on September 26, 2025, amid fears of a possible violent clash between rival cult groups on campus.
The suspects were identified as Corporal Onwukwe Godswill, an officer attached to the Elimgbu Police Division, and Ifeanyi Israel, a 200-level student of Biomedical Technology at UNIPORT.
“The University’s Internal Security team intercepted the suspects during the signing-out festivities, suspecting them of preparing for a confrontation with opposing cult members,” Iringe-Koko stated.
Following their arrest, the suspects were searched, leading to the discovery of firearms, ammunition, and sharp weapons.
Further investigation and a search of Corporal Onwukwe’s residence uncovered additional weapons, including a locally made pistol and two machetes.
The police command confirmed that both individuals are in custody, and a detailed investigation is ongoing to determine the extent of their involvement and identify other possible members of the alleged cult group.
Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, condemned the alleged involvement of a serving officer in cult activities, describing it as deeply troubling.
He reiterated the command’s commitment to rooting out criminal elements, stating that no one, regardless of position, would be shielded from the law.
“There will be no hiding place for criminals in Rivers State,” he declared. “We urge members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.”
