Over all best University in Nigeria emerges (see full list)

The University of Ibadan (UI) has been named Nigeria’s highest-ranked university in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, reclaiming the top national position after two years.

Results released on Thursday on THE’s official platform placed UI in the 801–1000 global category, making it the best-performing Nigerian institution in the latest edition of the rankings.

The feat marks a comeback for the institution, which last led Nigerian universities in 2023.

The 2026 rankings evaluated 2,191 universities from 115 countries, using 18 indicators across five major areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry income, and international outlook. The assessment was based on more than 174.9 million citations drawn from 18.7 million academic publications, alongside feedback from over 108,000 scholars worldwide.

UI rose from fourth place nationally in the 2025 rankings to reclaim the number one spot, overtaking Covenant University, which had topped the Nigerian list in both 2024 and 2025.

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) was the only other Nigerian institution to make the global top 1000, also ranking within the 801–1000 band.

Other notable Nigerian universities—Bayero University Kano (BUK), Covenant University, and Landmark University—were placed in the 1001–1200 global range.

In performance metrics, UNILAG recorded the highest research quality score among Nigerian institutions with 66.7. BUK ranked best in international outlook, while Covenant University led in industry engagement, reflecting its strong ties with the private sector.

Several institutions, including Ahmadu Bello University, the Federal University of Technology Minna, the University of Ilorin, the University of Jos, and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, were grouped in the 1201–1500 band.

A significant number of Nigerian universities appeared in the 1501+ category, highlighting persistent challenges in global competitiveness.

Overall, 51 Nigerian universities featured in the 2026 rankings. However, only UI and UNILAG secured positions within the global top 1000, while 14 institutions fell into the lowest ranking band and 27 universities that submitted data were not ranked.
