One person dead, others flee as Police operatives repel gunmen attack on Anglican Church

Operatives of the Imo State Police Command on Sunday, June 20, have killed one of the bandits terrorizing villagers in Omuma in Oru East local government area of Imo state.

It was learnt that some of his gang, about 9 of them were also shot at by the Police officers, however, they fled into a nearby bush, but with gunshot wounds.

According to the Police, they had attempted to attack an Anglican Church in the area, but due to the timely intervention of the cops, the bandits were overpowered.

CRIMECHANNELS gathered that the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Abutu Yaro made this disclosure at the Imo Headquarters Division in Owerri.

He said, “At about 11:30 am today (Sunday), the Omuma Divisional Police, got information that some armed boys were moving to an Anglican Church in Omuma in Oru East, to go and cause mayhem on getting this information.”


“The police, quickly mobilized a combined team of the police force, as our men were getting close to the corpers lodge in Omuma, that was abandoned due to incessant robbery activities there, the hoodlums on sighting the police opened fire on them.”

“However, due to our superior power one of the hoodlums was gunned down and others escaped with gun shot injuries. The one down was an ex-convict. He has been linked to the burning of a house belonging of the Imo state Governor, Hope Uzodimma, “he said.

He urged members of the public to be vigilant of their surroundings, adding that they should not fail to report any suspicious movement by any group or individual to the nearest Police station.
