Sheikh Gumi endorses President Tinubu’s Tax Reforms amid Northern opposition

Amid growing opposition from northern leaders, prominent Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has voiced strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills, calling them a positive step for Nigeria’s future.

While several northern governors, lawmakers, and traditional leaders have expressed concerns that the reforms may exacerbate poverty in the region, Gumi believes the bills will simplify tax administration, ease the burden on low-income earners, and eliminate issues of double taxation and excessive levies.

Gumi’s endorsement has added a powerful voice to the ongoing debate, particularly as he claimed to have thoroughly reviewed the proposed legislation—an effort some northern critics admitted they had not undertaken.

While praising the overall potential of the reforms, Gumi noted that the Value Added Tax (VAT) component was the only area in need of adjustment.

He remarked, “I believe the contentious VAT issue is the only part that needs to be reviewed; otherwise, it is a good package for all.”

In defense of the tax reform, President Tinubu emphasized that the initiative is designed to create a more equitable tax system, reduce Nigeria’s dependence on oil revenue, and promote local economic growth.
