Nigerians may call for constitutional ammendments for President Tinubu to run for 3rd term – Monarch

The Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, has said ongoing economic and governance reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could trigger public agitation for a constitutional amendment to extend his tenure beyond two terms.

In a statement issued through his spokesperson, Alli Ibrahim, to mark Tinubu’s 74th birthday, the monarch assessed the administration’s policy direction, noting what he described as early signs of impact across key sectors of the economy.

According to the statement, “the President’s leadership style and reform-driven agenda have begun to reshape key sectors of the economy, drawing attention from various quarters across the country.

“Many Nigerians may call for a constitutional review to enable Tinubu serve more than two terms in office,” the monarch said.

Oba Akanbi described the President as a decisive leader, highlighting reforms such as exchange rate unification and increased oil production as deliberate efforts to address long-standing structural challenges and reposition the economy.

“The administration has demonstrated a firm approach in tackling issues that previously hindered economic growth. Such steps had contributed to changes in key financial indicators,” he added.

He further pointed to what he described as improvements in Nigeria’s external reserves, estimating figures between $49.5 billion and $50.45 billion as of late February and March 2026, alongside gains in the naira’s value and increased foreign capital inflows.

The monarch also cited policy initiatives including local government autonomy, enhanced allocations to states, and ongoing infrastructure development as part of the administration’s broader reform framework.

“Local government autonomy is taking effect, states are receiving higher allocations, and major road projects are ongoing across the country,” the monarch said.

While acknowledging that past administrations attempted similar reforms, Oba Akanbi noted that political resistance had often stalled their implementation.

He stressed that sustained commitment to current policies would be crucial in consolidating economic gains and ensuring long-term stability.
