Local Govt Chairman, two others shot dead in Osun State chaos
In a tragic turn of events, Remi Abass, the former chairman of Irewole Local Government in Osun State, was shot dead by unknown gunmen at the local government secretariat in Ikire on Monday afternoon.
The attack took place in broad daylight, sending shockwaves through the community.
Eyewitnesses recounted the chaos as the attackers stormed the secretariat, firing multiple rounds. “It was sudden and chaotic. People ran for their lives,” a local resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Daily Post.
The Osun State Police Command confirmed the killing, with Police Public Relations Officer, SP Yemisi Opalola, stating that investigations were underway. “We are working tirelessly to apprehend the perpetrators and restore calm to the area,” she added.
Abass, who was elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), had been removed from office following a court ruling in November 2022 by the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo.
In a related incident in Boripe Local Government Area, two people were also killed amid escalating tensions between rival political factions.
Reports indicate that hoodlums allegedly aligned with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the APC clashed over control of the council. Eyewitnesses identified the victims as Ege and Igara, both shot dead by the armed assailants.
Ege, who recently switched allegiance from APC to PDP, was particularly notable as the only son of his parents, with his father also a member of the PDP.
Another person, identified as Yinka, a photographer, was critically injured during the fracas and is currently receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
The violent clashes have left residents in fear, with many fleeing their homes in search of safety, further heightening tensions in the region.
