Police officer arrested over alleged fatal shooting of Suspect, moved to Force Headquarters
The Delta State Police Command has moved a police officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary proceedings after he allegedly shot and killed a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday, following widespread outrage triggered by a viral video of the incident.
According to Edafe, the घटना occurred on Sunday, April 26, 2026, after operatives from the Effurun Area Command acted on intelligence provided by members of the public.
“The unfortunate incident occurred when operatives attached to Area Command Effurun received credible intelligence from members of the public regarding the deceased, who was reportedly apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition,” the statement said.
He explained that officers were dispatched to apprehend the suspect, but the operation escalated fatally.
“However, the police officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm, leading to the death of the suspect,” it added.
The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, was said to have condemned the incident, describing it as an extrajudicial killing of the 28-year-old suspect, and immediately ordered the officer’s arrest.
“Upon receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police directed the Area Commander, Effurun, to immediately arrest ASP Nuhu Usman and transfer him to the State Headquarters, Asaba, for necessary disciplinary action,” the statement noted.
Edafe said the officer has since been queried and transferred to Abuja, where he will face a disciplinary panel.
“The officer has since been queried and transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he will appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee, currently in session, for immediate disciplinary sanction and prosecution.
“The Command, in line with the policy of the Nigeria Police Force, emphasises respect for the rule of law, human rights, professionalism, accountability and public trust. The Command further reaffirms its zero tolerance for lawlessness, recklessness and extra-judicial conduct,” it said.
He added that the police boss extended condolences to the victim’s family and assured them of justice.
“The Commissioner of Police extends his sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and assures the bereaved family that the Command is fully committed to ensuring that justice is served,” the statement added.
Edafe also appealed to residents to remain calm and law-abiding as investigations and disciplinary processes continue.
The incident had sparked outrage after a video surfaced online showing a bound suspect being shot in broad daylight by armed men identified as police officers. The footage, which circulated widely on X, showed officers in civilian clothing operating beside a vehicle marked “Nigeria Police Force, Effurun Area Command.”
In the video, the victim is seen lying on the ground with his hands and legs tied, pleading for his life and offering to cooperate.
“Officers, abeg,” the man pleaded in the clip. “I’ll tell you everything. It was my friend who deceived me.”
As he attempted to provide information, he cried out, “He’s at Sapele. I’ll take you to him,” before one of the officers shot him in the leg.
“He’s at Sapele. I don’t know anything. “Please. I’ll take you to him. He’s at Sapele. I’ll take you to him, officer. Officer, I didn’t know,” the man wailed.
Moments later, a second shot was fired toward his head in full view of bystanders. His body was then carried into a police vehicle before the officers left the scene.
