Kano CP reacts as Governor reportedly request him to be redeployed away from State
Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has downplayed tensions following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s recent call for his redeployment, insisting that his relationship with the governor remains “friendly” and focused on ensuring peace and security in the state.
Governor Yusuf had, during the state’s 65th Independence Day celebration, publicly urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to transfer the police chief.
The governor’s comments were triggered by CP Bakori’s absence at the event and the reported withdrawal of police personnel from the parade.
However, addressing the issue during a press conference at the Command Headquarters, CP Bakori maintained that both parties are simply performing their constitutional responsibilities.
“All of us are doing our job, and we are still friends and collaborating to ensure security of lives and property in the state,” he said.
In the same briefing, CP Bakori announced the arrest of nine suspects linked to a violent robbery spree across Kano, including a particularly brutal incident in which a victim’s tooth was allegedly removed with a diamond tool.
“I am pleased to announce to you the successful arrest of nine suspects involved in a series of armed robbery operations in Kano State,” he stated.
According to the CP, the arrests followed an October 8 incident at around 2 a.m. in the Unguwar Wambai area of Dorayi Babba Quarters.
Armed with rifles, the suspects reportedly stormed a residence, stealing a Toyota Yaris, N3.7 million in local and foreign currency, mobile phones, and other valuables.
“The robbers, armed with rifles, made away with a Toyota Yaris vehicle, local and foreign currencies amounting to N3.7 million, three mobile phones, and other valuables.
In the process, they also brutally assaulted the complainant’s wife, removing one of her teeth with a diamond tool, causing her grievous hurt,” he said.
Following the initial arrest by Dorayi Division officers, Bakori said the Command’s Special Intervention Squad (SIS) launched a follow-up operation under his directive, leading to the capture of eight additional suspects across Kano and Kaduna States.
The suspects reportedly confessed to multiple robberies in Abuja, Kaduna, and Kano, including a recent attack in Unguwar Jakada, Dorayi Quarters.
Items recovered from the suspects include: One double-barrel gun (breach number: 273720), 18 live cartridges, One English Falcon pistol (breach number: RFJA 170521867), One scrapped Phoenix pistol, An iron cutter, two cutlasses, four sharp knives, Three torchlights, One operational Toyota Corolla LE (registration number: ADK 787)
CP Bakori said investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will be charged to court upon conclusion.
The Commissioner credited recent security successes to the Command’s community-based strategy, Operation Kukan Kura, which he said has significantly reduced crime in Kano.
“We have seen a geometric reduction in all forms of crime. Mobile phone snatching and robbery are becoming things of the past, while thuggery activities (fadan daba) have been largely crippled,” he added.
He also praised the officers involved in the arrests for their professionalism and commitment.
“Their dedication to duty has resulted in this significant breakthrough, and I urge all officers to continue working tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of the people of Kano State,” Bakori stated.
