JUST IN; Rev. Father suspended for engaging in secret wedding
In response to rumors that0 Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe was married in the United States, the Catholic Diocese of Warri, Delta State, has stated that he has been suspended from his priestly responsibilities.
The ‘Decree of Suspension’, a statement released on Thursday, January 16, 2025, and made public to the media on Sunday, served as the official announcement of the suspension.
According to the statement, co-signed by the Bishop of Warri, Rt. Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, and Chancellor/Notary Very Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo, Fr. Oghenerukevwe married Ms. Dora Chichah on December 29, 2024, at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, USA. A video of the wedding reportedly circulated widely on social media, prompting the Diocese to take immediate action.
The statement confirmed that Fr. Oghenerukevwe’s actions violated Canon law, specifically Canon 1394 S1, which led to his “Latae Sententiae” suspension. As a result, the priest is officially prohibited from performing any priestly duties.
In addition, the Diocese disclosed that Fr. Oghenerukevwe had submitted a request on November 30, 2024, to be released from his canonical obligations. However, despite being asked to provide the necessary documentation to complete the process, he proceeded to marry without following the proper steps.
“By this action, he is prohibited from presenting himself as a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Warri in any capacity,” the statement emphasized, noting that the suspension takes immediate effect in accordance with Canon 1333.
The Diocese also indicated that while Fr. Oghenerukevwe retains the right to petition for the revocation or amendment of the suspension, he must show a willingness to reform.
In conclusion, the statement expressed hopes for the priest’s reflection and reconciliation, praying that God would guide him on the path to redemption.
