JUST IN: Police Suspend Tinted Glass Permit Enforcement

The Nigeria Police Force has paused its enforcement of vehicle tinted glass permits in compliance with a recent court directive.

Confirming the development on Wednesday, October 8, the spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, said the suspension followed the official receipt of a court order halting the exercise.

The order came from the Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State, which last week directed both the Police and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to stop the enforcement nationwide.

The interim ruling, issued during proceedings in Suit No. FHC/WR/CS/103/2025 filed by John Aikpokpo-Martins against the IGP and the Force, instructed the authorities to maintain the status quo and “respect judicial processes pending further proceedings in the matter.”

Speaking in an interview on AIT, Adeh said: “Information reaching me from the office of the PRO is that the order has been received and the enforcement of the tinted permit is now on hold pending the court’s verdict.”

She emphasized that the police would comply with the court’s directive until the legal process concludes.

“We are waiting for the verdict. We are not against the courts, and we will continue to wait until we get a verdict,” she added.

Addressing questions about the rationale behind the tinted glass permit, Adeh explained it was a security measure aimed at curbing criminal activities.

“The law was not made by us. We are enforcers. The policy was purely security-driven. Some criminals were using tinted vehicles to commit offences, making it difficult for law enforcement to identify suspects,” she said.

She also refuted claims that the permit system was financially motivated, clarifying that all payments for the permits are routed through the Federal Government’s Treasury Single Account (TSA), and not handled by the police.
