JUST IN; Peter Obi tackles IGP Egbetokun over Palliative distribution directives

Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has strongly criticized the ban imposed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, on the distribution of palliatives to the poor, arguing that it is an hinderance to charitable efforts.

This decision followed a series of deadly stampedes during events aimed at providing aid to vulnerable Nigerians.

Reports indicate that 67 individuals, including 35 children, tragically lost their lives during stampedes at food distribution events in Ibadan, Okija, and Abuja.

In response to these incidents, the IGP issued a statement through police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi, warning that event organizers must coordinate with security agencies to avoid legal consequences.

In a post on X, on Monday, Obi expressed concern that the new restriction could deter philanthropists from offering assistance to those in need.

He argued that requiring police approval before distributing aid creates unnecessary red tape, hindering charitable efforts aimed at alleviating suffering.

Obi acknowledged that while the directive was a well-meaning response to the tragedies, he warned that it could lead to abuse and further discourage citizens from helping the poor.

He wrote, “The recent directive by the IGP to restrict the distribution of palliatives to the less privileged is concerning. Although it is a timely response to the recent tragedies, it is prone to misuse and could discourage people from offering help to the hungry and distressed.”

He emphasized that, while public safety is important, excessive bureaucracy should not stand in the way of acts of goodwill.

“Rather than requiring permission to help those in need, we should promote better organization and coordination of these efforts, not impose barriers that could prevent much-needed aid from reaching those suffering the most.”

Obi also urged the Federal Government to focus on addressing the root causes of the widespread economic hardship, rather than hindering those who are stepping in to fill the gaps.

“The government must do more to address the underlying causes of this hardship, offering lasting solutions instead of creating obstacles for those trying to alleviate the pain caused by its own policies.”

Concluding, Obi called on the IGP to review the directive and ensure that the police support efforts to ease the suffering of Nigerians, rather than creating division or discouragement.

He stressed that now, more than ever, is the time to encourage compassion and solidarity among citizens.
