Nobody is above the law: EFCC set to probe Tompolo over viral video
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has stated that former militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, will be investigated over a viral video showing alleged abuse of the naira.
A heated public debate has surfaced online as Nigerians call on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to take action against former militant leader Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, over an alleged incident of naira abuse.
The uproar began after a video shared by user Harrison A (#harreceipts) went viral on X, with the caption, “EFCC, see Tompolo and the Naira o,” drawing widespread attention and sparking calls for an official investigation.
The video, believed to be from Tompolo’s 54th birthday celebration in April, captures the Niger Delta figure dancing as a man showers him with bundles of ₦1,000 notes in a lavish display.
Responding to the demands by netizens, EFCC in a post on its official X handle on Monday said: “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer!”
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has repeatedly cautioned the public against spraying or mutilating the naira, emphasising that such acts constitute criminal offences under Nigerian law.
In April 2024, popular crossdresser Idris Olarewaju Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, was sentenced to six months in prison for naira abuse.
More recently, Lagos socialite Emeka Okonkwo, popularly called E-Money, was arrested by the EFCC for allegedly spraying naira notes and defacing foreign currencies, including U.S. dollars, during public events.
