CP summons DPO, following escape of two criminals from Police Custody
The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Surajudeen Olufemi Abaniwonda, has summoned the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ovwian/Aladja, CSP Bulus Musa, and his team for questioning after the escape of two notorious criminals from police custody in Aladja, Udu Local Government Area.
The escape, which has sparked outrage in the community, follows a formal petition addressed to the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun. According to sources within the State Command, the Commissioner of Police has initiated a full investigation into the incident, which appears to involve possible internal sabotage.
A senior officer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said, “The CP is deeply concerned and has ordered a thorough inquiry.
He is determined that all those responsible for the escape will face the full weight of the law.”
The petition, signed by the Aladja Community Council, accuses the Ovwian/Aladja police team of negligence and possibly collusion in the escape of Ovakporaye Jobome (also known as Rogers) and Debi, two of the most dangerous criminals in the region.
The suspects were arrested on December 31, 2024, following a surge in criminal activities in the area.
The Aladja Security Crack Team (ASCT), under the leadership of local official Hon. Andrew Ekwetafia Gbise JP, apprehended Jobome, Debi, and two other suspects, Kelvin Dukuye and Philip Faka, seizing ammunition in the process.
The suspects’ confessional statements were recorded in both video and audio formats as part of the investigation.
However, on January 4, 2025, authorities at the Ovwian/Aladja Police Station informed the community that Jobome and Debi had somehow managed to escape.
The news triggered a wave of anger and frustration, with locals accusing the police of either gross negligence or a deliberate cover-up.
The Aladja Community has now demanded immediate action to re-arrest the escaped criminals, citing the grave danger they pose to the safety of the area.
They also called for a full accountability of the officers involved, urging the Inspector General of Police and the Delta State Commissioner of Police to intervene swiftly to restore public confidence in the local law enforcement.
This incident has raised serious questions about the capacity and integrity of the police in handling high-risk criminals, with growing concerns that it could further erode security in the area.
The community has called for urgent measures to prevent any further breakdown in law and order.
