How Police officers tortured me in detention with hammer, machetes – Suspect laments

A victim of Police brutality and torture, Mr. Ifeanyi Osuji has narrated to a High court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, how the dismissed officers of the disbanded Eagle Crack unit of the State Police Command tortured him and 3 of his colleagues on Dec, 19 , 2019.

Speaking to the court, Osuji alleged that the Policemen beat him mercilessly with a 2 by 2 piece of wood. He added that a hammer was also used
on him and 3 of his colleagues who were apprehended. He however, said that one of his colleagues, one Mr. Chima Ikwunado, died as a result of the unending beating.

He said, “the Police officers did not ask us for our car particulars. They saw some money and tools in the car, and still arrested us.”

The trial Judge, Justice Florence Fiberesima after listening to the witness, adjourned till 6th, 14th and 15th of October, 2021 for continuation.

According to reports, the incident caused an uproar in Rivers state in the year 2019, as many people took to the street to protest the death of
Ikwunado, who died in police custody.


Meanwhile, the accused Police officers responsible for the death of Ikwunado, CRIMECHANNELS learnt were
subsequently arrested, dismissed and charged to court.
