Federal Govt issued seven-day ultimatum to resolve dispute with ASUU
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a stern seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to end their ongoing impasse and avert another round of strike action that could once again destabilize the nation’s higher education system.
The warning was issued on Wednesday in a statement signed by NANS President, Olushola Oladoja, who expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions between the two parties.
NANS described any potential interruption to academic activities as a serious setback for students across the country, insisting that prolonged negotiations or industrial actions are no longer acceptable.
Oladoja noted that under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope administration, the education sector had witnessed two consecutive academic years without disruption—a level of stability he said had not been seen since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.
However, he warned that the threat of fresh industrial action by ASUU now places that progress in jeopardy.
“It is, therefore, in this spirit that NANS appeals to both ASUU and the Federal Government’s negotiation team to find a workable and lasting solution within the next seven (7) days,” the statement read.
Highlighting the increased number of students now depending on government-backed educational loans, NANS stressed that any disruption would not only delay graduations but also impose additional financial and emotional burdens on students.
“Nigerian students, many of whom are now studying through educational loans, cannot afford to have their academic calendar disrupted or their duration on campus extended again,” the union warned.
The student body urged both parties to prioritise dialogue and mutual compromise, warning that failure to reach a resolution within the stipulated period would force Nigerian students to “take necessary action” to protect their future.
